1 “아마샤는 25세에 왕위에 올라 예루살렘에서 29년을 통치하였다. 그리고 그의 어머니는 예루살렘 사람 여호앗단이었다.”Amaziah came to the throne at the age of 25 and reigned 29 years in Jerusalem. And his mother was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem
‭‭2 “아마샤는 여호와께서 보시기에 옳은 일을 하였으나 전심 전력으로 하지는 않았다.”Amaziah did what was right in Jehovah’s sight, but not with all his might
‭‭3 “그는 세력 기반을 튼튼하게 굳힌 다음 자기 아버지를 살해한 신하들을 처형시켰다.”After solidifying his power base, he executed the subjects who had murdered his father
‭‭4 “그러나 아마샤가 그들의 자녀는 죽이지 않았는데 이것은 모세의 율법책에 기록된 대로 부모는 자녀의 죄 때문에 죽어서는 안 되며 자녀도 부모의 죄 때문에 죽는 일이 있어서는 안 되고 모든 사람들은 각자 자기 죄에 대해서만 그 대가를 치러야 한다는 여호와의 명령에 그가 순종하였기 때문이었다.”But Amaziah did not kill their children, because he obeyed the command of the Lord, as it is written in the book of the Law of Moses, that parents must not die for the sins of their children, and that children must not die for the sins of their parents, but that each should pay for his own sins
‭‭5-6 “아마샤는 유다와 베냐민 지파 사람들을 모아 군 부대를 조직하고 그들이 속해 있는 집안에 따라 1,000명으로 구성된 부대와 100명으로 구성된 부대에 각 지휘관을 세웠다. 그리고 인원을 점검한 결과 총병력은 30만 명이었다. 이들은 모두 20세 이상의 사람들로 창과 칼을 능숙하게 쓸 수 있는 잘 훈련된 군인들이었다. 또 아마샤는 은 3,400킬로그램으로 이스라엘군 10만 명도 고용하였다.”Amaziah gathered the men of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin and organized them into military units, and appointed commanders for each of the 1,000-man and 100-man divisions according to their families. And as a result of checking the number of people, the total number of troops was 300,000. All of them were well-trained soldiers over the age of 20 who were able to wield spears and swords proficiently. Amaziah also hired 100,000 Israeli soldiers with 3,400 kg of silver
‭‭7 “그러나 이때 한 예언자가 왕에게 와서 이렇게 말하였다. “왕이시여, 이 이스라엘군을 데리고 가지 마십시오. 여호와께서는 에브라임 사람들과 함께하시지 않습니다.”But at this time a prophet came to the king and said: “My lord, do not take these Israelites with you. Jehovah is not with the Ephraimites
‭‭8 “만일 왕이 저들과 함께 출전하시면 아무리 잘 싸워도 왕은 패할 것입니다. 하나님에게는 도우실 능력도 있고 패하게 하실 능력도 있기 때문입니다.””If the king goes out with them, no matter how well he fights, he will be defeated. For God has the power to help and the power to defeat.”
‭‭9 “이때 아마샤가 물었다. “하지만 내가 은 3,400킬로그램을 이미 주었는데 이 일을 어떻게 하면 좋겠소?” 그러자 그 예언자는 “여호와께서 이보다 더 많은 것을 왕에게 주실 수 있습니다” 하고 대답했다.”At this time, Amasha asked. “But how do you want me to do this since I have already given you 3,400 kg of silver?” The prophet replied: “Jehovah can give you more than this.”
‭‭10 “그래서 아마샤가 에브라임에서 온 이스라엘군을 돌려보내자 그들은 유다 사람들을 증오하며 고향으로 돌아갔다.”So Amaziah sent back the Israelites from Ephraim, and they returned home, hating the people of Judah
‭‭11 “아마샤는 용기를 내어 병력을 이끌고 ‘소금 골짜기’ 로 가서 에돔군 10,000명을 죽이고”Amaziah took courage and led his troops to the Valley of Salt and killed 10,000 Edomites
‭‭12 “또 10,000명은 생포하여 높은 절벽으로 끌고 가 거기서 밀어뜨려 몸이 박살나게 하였다.”Another 10,000 were captured and dragged to a high cliff, where they pushed them and crushed their bodies
‭‭13 “한편 아마샤가 자기와 함께 출전하지 못하도록 돌려보낸 이스라엘군이 사마리아와 벧 – 호론 사이에 있는 유다 성들을 기습하여 3,000명을 죽이고 많은 물건을 약탈해 갔다.”Meanwhile, the Israelites, who had sent Amaziah back to prevent him from going out with him, raided the cities of Judah between Samaria and Beth-Horon, killing 3,000 people and plundering a lot of goods
‭‭14 “아마샤왕은 에돔 사람을 죽이고 돌아올 때 그들의 우상들을 가지고 와서 신으로 모셔 놓고 그 앞에 경배하며 분향하였다.”When King Amaziah returned from killing the Edomites, he brought their idols and enshrined them as gods, worshiped and burned incense in front of them
‭‭15 “그래서 여호와께서는 노하셔서 한 예언자를 아마샤에게 보내 이렇게 물어 보도록 하였다. “자기 백성조차 왕의 손에서 구원하지 못한 신들을 왕은 어째서 섬기십니까?””So the Lord was angry and sent a prophet to Amaziah to ask: “Why do you serve gods who have not saved even their own people from your hand?”
‭‭16 “그러자 왕은 “언제부터 내가 너를 고문으로 삼았느냐? 내가 너를 죽여 버리기 전에 입을 닥쳐라” 하고 말문을 막았다. 그래서 그 예언자는 떠나면서 왕에게 마지막 경고를 했다. “왕이 이런 짓을 하고도 나의 충고를 받아들이지 않으므로 하나님께서 왕을 멸망시키기로 작정한 줄 아십시오.””Then the king said, “Since when did I make you my adviser? Shut up before I kill you.” So, as the prophet departed, he gave the king a final warning. “Know that God has determined to destroy you because you have done these things and have not listened to my advice.”
‭‭17 “유다의 아마샤왕은 자기 보좌관들과 상의한 후에 예후의 손자이며 여호아하스의 아들인 이스라엘의 여호아스왕에게 사람을 보내 정면으로 한번 겨루어 보자는 뜻을 전했다.”King Amaziah of Judah consulted with his advisers and sent a message to King Jehoash of Israel, son of Jehoahaz and grandson of Jehu, to challenge him head-to-head
‭‭18 “그러나 이스라엘의 여호아스왕은 아마샤에게 이런 회답을 보냈다. “한번은 레바논의 가시나무가 백향목에게 ‘네 딸을 내 아들에게 주어 아내를 삼게 하라’ 하였으나 바로 그때 들짐승이 지나가다가 그 가시나무를 짓밟아 버렸다.”However, King Jehoash of Israel sent this reply to Amaziah. “Once a thorn tree in Lebanon said to a cedar tree, ‘Give your daughter to my son for a wife
‭‭19 “네가 에돔을 쳐서 이기더니 대단히 교만해졌구나. 내가 충고해 두지만 너는 네 집이나 지키고 앉아 있거라. 어째서 네가 화를 스스로 불러일으켜 너와 유다가 함께 망하려고 하느냐?””You defeated Edom and became very arrogant. I advise you to sit guarding your own house. Why do you stir up your own wrath to destroy you and Judah together?”
‭‭20 “그러나 아마샤는 그 말을 듣지 않았다. 이것은 그가 에돔 우상들을 섬겼으므로 하나님께서 그를 멸망시키기로 작정하셨기 때문이었다.”But Amasha didn't listen to that. This was because he served the idols of Edom, and God determined to destroy him
‭‭21 “이스라엘의 여호아스가 유다를 공격하였다. 그와 아마샤왕은 유다의 벧 – 세메스에서 만나 격돌했는데”Jehoash of Israel attacked Judah. He and King Amaziah met and clashed at Beth – Shemesh in Judah
‭‭22 “이 전투에서 유다군은 패하여 모두 자기 집으로 도망치고 말았다.”The army of Judah was defeated in this battle and all fled to their homes
‭‭23 “이스라엘의 여호아스왕은 유다 왕 아마샤를 생포하고 또 예루살렘으로 가서 에브라임문에서부터 성 모퉁이문까지 180미터에 달하는 성벽을 헐어 버렸다.”King Jehoash of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah and went to Jerusalem and tore down the 180-meter wall from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate
‭‭24 “그리고 그는 오벧 – 에돔이 지키고 있는 성전의 모든 금은 비품과 왕궁 재물을 약탈하고 사람들을 인질로 잡아 사마리아로 돌아갔다.”Then he plundered all the gold and silver from the temple guarded by Obed-Edom and the property of the king's palace, took the people hostage, and returned to Samaria
‭‭25 “그러나 유다의 아마샤왕은 이스라엘의 여호아스왕이 죽은 후에도 15년을 더 살았다.”However, King Amaziah of Judah lived another 15 years after the death of King Jehoash of Israel
‭‭26 “그 밖에 아마샤가 행한 모든 일은 유다와 이스라엘 왕들의 역사책에 자세히 기록되어 있다.”Everything else Amaziah did is recorded in detail in the History of the Kings of Judah and Israel
‭‭27 “아마샤가 여호와를 저버린 후부터 예루살렘에는 줄곧 반역 음모가 있었다. 그래서 그는 결국 라기스로 피신했는데 그의 대적들은 그 곳까지 따라가서 그를 죽이고”Ever since Amaziah forsook Yahweh, there had been a plot of treason in Jerusalem. So he eventually fled to Lachish, where his enemies followed and killed him
‭‭28 “그의 시체를 말에 싣고 예루살렘으로 돌아와 다윗성에 있는 그 조상들의 묘에 장사하였다.”They brought his body back to Jerusalem and buried it in the tombs of their ancestors in the City of David
