1. 그 날 저녁 그 두 천사가 소돔에 도착했을때 롯이 소돔 성문에 앉아 있었다. 롯은 그들을 보자 즉시 일어나 그들을 영접하고 땅에 엎드려 절하며

(That evening, when the two angels arrived in Sodom, Lot was sitting at the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he immediately got up to meet them, and fell to the ground and bowed down)

2. "내 주여, 종의 집으로 들어와서 발을 씻고 주무신 다음에 내일 아침 일찍 일어나 갈 길을 가소서" 하였다. 그때 그들이 "아니다. 우리가 거리에서 밤을 보내겠다" 하였으나

("My lord, come into your servant's house, wash your feet and sleep, then get up early tomorrow morning and go on your way." Then they said, "No, we will spend the night on the street.")

3. 롯이 간청하므로 결국 그들은 롯의 집으로 들어갔다. 롯이 그들에게 음식을 잘 차려 주고 누룩 넣지 않은 빵도 만들어 주자 그들은 맛있게 먹었다. 

(At Lot's plea, they eventually entered Lot's house. Lot made a good meal for them and made unleavened bread, and they ate it)

4. 그들이 잠자리에 들기 전에 소돔 사람들이 어른 아이 할 것 없이 사방에서 마구 몰려와 그 집을 둘러싸고

(Before they went to bed, Sodomites, young and old, flocked from all directions and surrounded the house)

5. 롯을 부르며 "오늘 저녁 네 집에 온 사람들이 어디 있느냐? 그들을 끌어내라. 우리가 강간하겠다" 하고 외쳤다

(Calling Lot, he shouted, "Where are the people who have come to your house this evening? Bring them out. We will rape them")

6. 롯이 밖으로 나가서 등 뒤로 문을 닫고(Lot went out and shut the door behind his back)

7. 그들에게 말하였다. "여러분, 부탁합니다. 제발 이런 악한 짓은 하지 마시오

(told them "Everyone, please. Please don't do such evil things)

8. 나에게 시집가지 않은 두 딸이 있습니다. 그 딸들을 당신에게 내어줄 테니 당신들 좋을 대로 하시고 이 사람들에게는 제발 아무 짓도 하지 말아 주시오. 이들은 내 집에 온 손님들입니다"

(I have two daughters who are not married. I will give them to you, so do whatever you like, and please do not do anything to these people. These are the guests who come to my house")

9. 그러나 그들이 "너는 물러서라. 이 이방인을 들어와서 살게 했더니 이제는 이놈이 우리 법관 노릇을 하려고 드는구나. 그들보다 네가 먼저 혼이 나야겠다" 하고 계속 롯을 밀어붙이며 달려들어 문을 부수려고 하였다

(However, they said, "Back away. We let this stranger come in and live, but now this guy is trying to serve as our judge. You must get angry before them")

10. 그때 안에 있던 그 사람들이 손을 내밀어 롯을 집 안으로 끌어들이고 문을 닫은 다음

(Then the men inside reached out their hands and took Lot into the house and shut the door)

11. 어른 아이 할 것 없이 문 밖에 있는 사람들의 눈을 모조리 어둡게 하자 그들은 문을 찾지 못하였다

(They darkened the eyes of everyone outside the door, both adults and children, and they couldn't find the door)

12. 그리고 그 두 사람이 롯에게 말하였다. "이 곳에 너 외에 또 다른 사람이 있느냐? 네 자녀나 사위나 그 밖에 다른 친척이 이 성 안에 있으면 그들을 모두 성 밖으로 나가게 하라

(And the two said to Lot. "Is there anyone else here besides you? If your children, son-in-law, or other relatives are in this city, let them all go out)

13. 우리가 이 성을 멸망시키겠다. 이 성의 죄악이 하늘에 사무쳤으므로 여호와께서 이 성을 멸망시키려고 우리를 보내셨다"

(We will destroy this city. The iniquity of this city has reached the heavens, and the LORD has sent us to destroy it")

-> 나와 우리 또한 항상 깨어 있어야 한다. 어느 때에 주님이 세상을 멸망시키려 오실지 모른다

(Me and we must always be awake. You never know when the Lord will come to destroy the world)

14. 그래서 롯이 나가서 자기 딸들의 약혼자들에게 "너희는 빨리 이 성에서 떠나라. 여호와께서 이 성을 멸망시키실 것이다" 하였으나 그들은 그 말을 농담으로 여겼다

(So Lot went out and told his daughters' fiancées, "Get out of this city quickly, for the LORD will destroy it." But they took it as a joke)

-> 하나님께서도 나와 우리에게 우리가 짓고 있는 그 죄악에서 떠나라고 하시는데, 우리는 그 분의 음성을 대수롭지 않게 여기는 것 같다

(God also tells me and us to turn away from the iniquity we are committing, but we seem to take his voice lightly)

15. 동이 트자 천사들이 롯을 재촉하며 "서둘러 여기 있는 네 아내와 두 딸을 데리고 나가거라. 그렇지 않으면 너희가 이 성과 함께 망하고 말 것이다" 하였다

(At dawn, the angels hurried to Lot and said, "Hurry, take your wife and your two daughters out here, or you will perish along with this city")

16. 그러나 롯이 망설이자 그 천사들이 롯과 그의 아내와 두 딸의 손을 잡아 성 밖으로 이끌어내었는데 이것은 여호와께서 롯에게 자비를 베푸셨기 때문이다

(But when Lot hesitated, the angels took Lot, his wife, and his two daughters by the hand and led them out of the city, because the Lord had mercy on Lot)

-> 나와 우리도 하나님이 명령하시는데 고민하는 순간에도, 주님께서는 도움의 손길을 뻗치신다

(Even when we and I are troubled by God's commands, the Lord reaches out to help)

17. 천사들은 그들을 성 밖으로 이끌어낸 후에 이렇게 말하였다. "너희는 도망하여 목숨을 구하라. 뒤돌아보거나 도중에 멈추지 말고 산으로 도망하라. 그렇지 않으면 죽게 될 것이다"

(After bringing them out of the city, the angels said: "Escape, save your life. Run to the mountain without looking back or stopping on the way. Otherwise, you will die")

18. 그러나 롯이 이렇게 말하였다. "내 주여, 제발 그렇게 하지 마소서(But Lot said: "My lord, please don't do tha)

19. 주께서는 내 생명을 구하시려고 나에게 큰 은혜와 사랑을 베푸셨습니다만 내가 산까지 달아날 수가 없습니다. 도중에 재앙을 만나 죽을지도 모릅니다

(You have given me great grace and love to save my life, but I cannot run to the mountains. You may meet a disaster on the way and die)

-> 나와 우리 또한 하나님께서 도와주시려고 하시는데, 바로 순종하지 않고 두려움에 가득 차 있는 모습을 본다

(Me and I see that God is trying to help us, but we are not obeying and we are filled with fea)

20. 보십시오. 저기 도망하기에 가까운 작은 성이 있습니다. 저 성은 아주 작지 않습니까? 나를 그리로 도망하게 해 주십시오. 그러면 내가 안전할 것입니다"

-> 이때 롯이 눈에 보이는 선택이 아닌, 무조건적인 믿음으로 산으로 달아났으면 어떻게 되었을까? 그들의 딸들이 아버지와 근친상간하는 죄는 안 범했을 것 같다

(What would have happened if Lot had fled to the mountain by unconditional faith instead of a visible choice? It is unlikely that their daughters would have committed incest with their father)

21. 그러자 그가 대답하였다. "좋다. 내가 네 요구대로 그 성을 멸망시키지 않겠다

(Then he answered. "Okay. I will not destroy the city at your request)

-> 그럼에도 불구하고, 하나님은 나 또는 우리가 선택한 것에 대해서 들어주시는 분이시다

(Nevertheless, God is the One who listens to me or what we choose)

22. 너희는 빨리 그 곳으로 도망하여라. 너희가 그 곳에 도착할 때까지는 내가 아무것도 할수가 없다" 그래서 그때부터 그 성 이름을 작다는 뜻으로 '소알' 이라고 불렀다

(You must flee there quickly. I can't do anything until you get there." So from then on, the name of the city was called 'Zoar', meaning small)

23. 롯이 소알에 이르렀을 때 해가 떠오르고 있었다(The sun was rising when Lot reached Zoar)

24. 그때 여호와께서 소돔과 고모라 성에 하늘에서 유황과 불을 비처럼 쏟아

(At that time the LORD rained brimstone and fire from heaven on the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah)

25. 그 성들과 온 들과 거기에 사는 모든 사람들과 땅에서 자라는 모든 것을 완전히 소멸하셨다

(He utterly destroyed the cities and all the fields, all those who lived there, and everything that grew on the earth)

26. 그러나 롯의 아내는 뒤를 돌아보았기 때문에 소금 기둥이 되었다

(But Lot's wife turned into a pillar of salt because she looked back)

-> 하나님께서 나와 우리의 살길을 열어주시는데도, 우리는 자꾸만 세상의 즐거움을 보고 허우적 대고 만다

(Even though God opens the way for us and our lives, we continue to struggle with the joys of the world)

27. 그 날 아침에 아브라함이 일찍 일어나 전날 여호와 앞에 섰던 곳으로 가서

(Abraham got up early that morning and went to the place where he had stood before the Lord the day before)

28. 소돔과 고모라와 그 온 들을 바라보니 그 땅에서 시커먼 연기가 치솟아 오르고 있었다

(I looked at Sodom and Gomorrah and all its fields, and black smoke was rising from the land)

29. 하나님은 롯이 살던 들의 성들을 멸망시키실 때에 아브라함을 생각하셔서 롯이 그 재앙을 안전하게 피할 수 있도록 하셨다

(God thought of Abraham when he destroyed the cities of the field where Lot lived, so that Lot could escape the disaster safely)

-> 하나님이 아브라함을 얼마나 사랑하셨는지 알 수 있는 대목이다

(This is a passage that shows how much God loved Abraham)

30. 롯은 소알에 사는 것이 두려워 두 딸과 함께 그 곳을 떠나 산으로 올라가서 동굴 속에 살았다

(Lot, afraid of living in Zoar, left there with his two daughters, went up the mountain, and lived in a cave)

-> 나와 우리도 하나님께서 두려워하지 말라고 하시는데, 주님을 믿지 못하고 인간적인 선택으로 평생을 산다

(Me and us, God tells us not to be afraid, but we do not believe in the Lord and we live our whole lives through human choices)

31. 하루는 큰 딸이 작은 딸에게 이렇게 말하였다. "우리 아버지는 늙으셨고 이 일대에는 세상 관습대로 우리와 결혼할 남자가 없다

(One day the eldest daughter said to the younger daughter: “My father is old, and there is no man in this world to marry us according to the custom of the world)

-> 하나님을 두려워했다면 그분께 구하고 방법을 찾았을건데, 환경적인 합리화로 자기들의 선택을 우선시하여 아주 안 좋은 결과를 가져온다

(If they feared God, they would have asked Him and found a way, but they prioritize their choices with environmental rationalization, with very bad results)

32. 그러니 우리가 아버지에게 술을 먹이고 아버지의 잠자리에 들어 아버지를 통해서 우리 가족의 혈통을 이어 가자"

(So let's drink our father, go to his bed, and carry on the lineage of our family through him")

33. 그러고서 그들은 그 날 밤 아버지에게 술을 먹이고 먼저 큰 딸이 아버지의 잠자리에 들었다. 그러나 아버지는 술에 취하여 딸이 한 일을 전혀 알지 못하였다

(Then they gave their father a drink that night, and first the eldest daughter went to his father's bed. But the father was drunk and knew nothing of what his daughter had done)

34. 다음날 큰 딸이 자기 동생에게 "어젯밤에는 내가 아버지의 잠자리에 들었다. 오늘 밤에도 우리가 아버지에게 술을 먹이자. 이번에는 네가 아버지의 잠자리에 들어 아버지를 통해서 우리 가족의 혈통을 이어 가자" 하고

(The next day, the eldest daughter said to her sister, "Last night I went to my father's bed. Let's drink to him again tonight. This time, you go to your father's bed, and let's continue our family line through him")

35. 그날 밤도 그들은 아버지에게 술을 먹였다. 이번에는 작은 딸이 아버지의 잠자리에 들었으나 아버지는 작은 딸이 한 일도 알지 못하였다

(That night they also gave their father a drink. This time the younger daughter slept with the father, but the father did not know what the younger daughter had done)

36. 이렇게 해서 롯의 두 딸은 자기들의 아버지를 통해서 임신하게 되었다

(In this way, Lot's two daughters became pregnant through their father)

37. 큰 딸은 아들을 낳아 이름을 모압이라고 지었는데 그는 오늘날 모압 사람들의 조상이 되었다

(The eldest daughter bore a son and named him Moab, who became the ancestor of the Moabites today)

‘아버지의 소생’이란 뜻. 소돔 멸망 후 롯의 맏딸이 아버지와 근친상간 하여 낳은 아들(창 19:37). 훗날 모압 족속의 조상이 되었다. 모압 족속은 그모스를 국가신으로 숭배하였다(민 21:29). 이들은 남쪽으로는 세렛 골짜기, 북쪽으로는 아르논 강을 경계로 하여 사해 동편 해발 900m의 고원 지대를 중심으로 거주하였다(민 21:13; 삿 11:18).
It means 'father's rebirth'. A son born to Lot's eldest daughter after the destruction of Sodom by incest with her father (Genesis 19:37). He later became the ancestor of the Moabites. The Moabites worshiped Chemosh as a national deity (Numbers 21:29). 38. 그리고 작은 딸도 아들을 낳아 이름을 벤-암미라고 지었으며 그는 오늘날 암몬 사람들의 조상이 되었다

연합 이스라엘 왕국의 사울 왕 때는 암몬의 왕 나하스가 요르단 강 서편 지역의 야베스 길앗까지 쳐들어갔다가 사울의 33만 대군에게 정벌당하기도 했다. 그리고 뒤를 이은 다윗이 대대적인 이민족 정벌을 하여 암몬인들은 크게 패했고 후에 아람인들과 동맹을 맺고 다윗에게 반란을 일으켰으나 도리어 다시 정벌당했다.

그리고 바빌론에서 돌아온 이스라엘 민족이 성전 재건하려는 것을 방해하다가 헬레니즘 시대 유다 마카베오에 의해 희석되었다.
