[현대인성경 구약 창세기 32장] 에서와의 거사를 앞두고 하나님과 씨름에서 이긴 야곱 : [Modern Human Bible, Old Testament, Genesis 32] Jacob who won the wrestling with God ahead of his death with Esau

1. 야곱은 계속 길을 가다가 하나님의 천사들을 만났다

(As Jacob continued on his way, he met angels of God)

2. 그는 천사들을 보고 "이들은 하나님의 군대이다" 하며 그 곳 이름을 '마하나임' 이라 하였다

(When he saw the angels, he said, "These are the armies of God." And he called the name of the place Mahanaim)

3. 야곱은 세일 땅 에돔에 있는 자기 형 에서에게 몇몇 종들을 먼저 보내며

(Jacob sent some servants first to his brother Esau, who was in Edom in the land of Seir)

4. 이렇게 전하라고 지시하였다. "형님, 동생 야곱이 문안드립니다. 저는 지금까지 라반 외삼촌과 함께 살았는데

(I was instructed to say this. “Brother, my brother Jacob greets me. I have lived with Laban’s maternal uncle until now)

5. 이제 저에게도 소와 나귀와 양과 염소와 남녀 종들이 있습니다. 내가 형님의 너그러운 사랑을 바라고 이렇게 사람을 보내 안부를 전합니다"

(Now I also have oxen and donkeys and sheep and goats and male and female servants. I hope for your generous love, and I send this person to say hello")

6. 그 종들은 에서에게 갔다가 돌아와서 "지금 주인의 형 에서가 주인을 만나려고 400명이나 되는 사람들을 거느리고 오고 있습니다" 하고 말하였다

(The servants went to Esau and came back and said, "Now Esau, your brother, is coming with 400 men to meet you")

7. 그러자 야곱은 몹시 두려워하고 번민하여 자기와 함께 있는 사람들과 양과 소와 낙타를 두 떼로 나누고

(Then Jacob was very afraid and troubled, and divided the men with him, the sheep, the cattle, and the camels, into two groups)

8. "에서가 와서 한 떼를 치면 나머지 한 떼는 도망할 수 있을 것이다" 하며 혼자 중얼거렸다

("If Esau comes and strikes one group, the rest will be able to escape," he murmured to himself)

9. 그러고서 야곱은 이렇게 기도하였다. "내 할아버지 아브라함의 하나님, 내 아버지 이삭의 하나님 여호와여, 주께서는 전에 나에게 '네 고향 네 친척에게 돌아가거라. 내가 너에게 은혜를 베풀겠다' 하고 말씀하셨습니다

(Then Jacob prayed: "O LORD, the God of my grandfather Abraham, the God of my father Isaac, you have said to me, 'Go back to your hometown and to your relatives. I will do you a favor')

10. 나는 주께서 나에게 보여 주신 모든 자비와 신실하심을 조금도 감당할 수 없습니다. 내가 지팡이 하나만 가지고 이 요단을 건넜는데 지금은 두 떼를 이루었습니다

(I can't bear all the mercy and faithfulness the Lord has shown me. I have crossed this Jordan with only one staff, and now there are two flocks)

11. 내가 주께 간절히 기도합니다. 나를 내 형 에서의 손에서 구해 주소서. 그가 와서 나와 내 처자들을 칠까 두렵습니다

(I pray earnestly to the Lord. Deliver me from the hand of my brother Esau. I am afraid he will come and attack me and my wives)

12. 주께서는 '내가 너에게 은혜를 베풀어 네 후손을 셀 수 없는 바다의 모래처럼 많게 하겠다' 고 말씀하셨습니다"

(The Lord has said, 'I will be gracious to you, and I will make your descendants as numerous as the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted'")

13. 야곱은 거기서 밤을 새고 자기 형 에서에게 보낼 선물을 준비했는데

(Jacob stayed up all night there to prepare a gift for his brother Esau)

14. 그것은 암염소 200마리, 숫염소 20마리, 암양 200마리, 숫양 20마리,

(200 female goats, 20 male goats, 200 ewes, 20 rams,)

15. 젖 짜는 낙타 30마리와 그 새끼들, 암소 40마리, 황소 10마리, 암나귀 20마리, 수나귀 10마리였다

(30 milking camels and their young, 40 cows, 10 oxen, 20 female donkeys, and 10 male donkeys)

16. 야곱은 그 짐승들을 여러 떼로 나누어 종들에게 맡기고 "너희는 각 때마다 간격을 두어 짐승들을 몰고 먼저 가거라" 하고

(Jacob divided the beasts into groups and gave them to his servants, and said, "Set a gap between you and drive the animals, and go first")

17. 제일 선두에 가는 자에게 이렇게 지시하였다. "내 형 에서가 너를 만나 '네 주인은 누구며 너는 어디로 가느냐? 네 앞에 있는 이 짐승들은 누구의 것이냐?' 하고 묻거든

(This was instructed to those who were at the forefront. "My brother Esau met you and said, 'Who is your master, and where are you going? Whose are these beasts before you?' I ask)

18. 너는 그에게 '이것들은 당신의 종 야곱의 것인데 그의 주인 에서에게 보내는 선물입니다. 그리고 내 주인 야곱도 뒤에 오고 있습니다' 하고 대답하여라"

(You say to him, 'These are your servant Jacob's, a gift to his master Esau. And my master Jacob is also coming behind him')

19. 그는 또 두 번째와 세 번째 가는 자와 그리고 각 떼를 따라가는 모든 자들에게도 같은 지시를 하였다. "너희도 에서를 만나거든 이와 똑같이 말하고

(He also gave the same instructions to the second and third goers, and to all who followed each group. “When you meet Esau, say the same thing)

20. '당신의 종 야곱이 우리 뒤에 있습니다' 하고 말하라" 야곱이 이렇게 한 것은 먼저 선물을 보내 형의 감정을 누그러지게 한 다음에 그를 만나면 그가 자기를 용서할 것이라고 생각했기 때문이었다

(Say, 'Your servant Jacob is behind us.'" Jacob did this because he thought that he would forgive him if he met him after he had first sent a gift to soften his brother's feelings)

21. 그래서 야곱은 선물을 먼저 보내고 그 날 밤을 천막에서 보내게 되었다

(So Jacob sent the gift first and spent the night in a tent)

22. 야곱은 밤에 일어나 두 아내와 두 여종과 그의 열 한 아들을 인도하여 얍복 나루를 건너게 하였다

(Jacob got up by night and led his two wives, his two maidservants, and his eleven sons to cross the naval of Jabbok)

23. 그는 그들과 그의 모든 소유를 그 시내 건너편으로 보내고

(He sent them and all that he had to the other side of the brook)

24. 자기만 홀로 남았는데 어떤 사람이 와서 날이 새도록 야곱과 씨름하다가

(He was alone, and a man came and wrestled with Jacob until daybreak)

25. 자기가 이길 수 없는 것을 알고 야곱의 엉덩이를 쳤다. 그래서 그와 씨름하는 중에 야곱은 엉덩이뼈가 위골되었다

(Knowing that he could not win, he struck Jacob in the ass. So, while wrestling with him, Jacob got his hip bone up)

26. 그때 그 사람이 말하였다. "날이 새는데 나를 가게 하라" "당신이 나에게 축복하지 않으면 내가 당신을 놓아 주지 않겠습니다"

(Then the man said "Let me go at dawn" "I won't let you go unless you bless me")

27. "네 이름이 무엇이냐?" "야곱입니다"("What is your name?" "I'm Jacob")

28. "네가 하나님과 겨루고 사람과 겨루어 이겼으므로 다시는 네 이름을 야곱이라 하지 않고 '이스라엘' 이라 부를 것이다"

(“Because you have fought with God and with men, and you have overcome, you will no longer call your name Jacob, but will call you ‘Israel’”)

-> 사실은 야곱이 이긴 게 아니라, 하나님이 져 주신 것이다

(The truth is, it wasn't Jacob who won, it was God who lost)

29. "당신의 이름을 나에게 말해 주십시오" 그러자 그 사람은 "네거 어째서 내 이름을 묻느냐?" 하며 거기서 야곱에게 축복하였다

("Tell me your name." Then the man said, "Why are you asking my name?" and blessed Jacob there)

30. 그래서 야곱은 "내가 하나님과 대면하고서도 죽지 않고 살아 남았다" 하며 그 곳 이름을 '브니엘' 이라 하였다

(So Jacob said, "I met God, and I did not die, but I survived." And he called the name of the place 'Peniel')

31. 그가 브니엘을 떠날 때 해가 돋았는데 그는 엉덩이뼈가 위골되었기 때문에 절뚝거렸다

(The sun came up when he left Peniel, and he was limping because his hip bone was broken)

32. 그 사람이 야곱의 엉덩이 힘줄을 쳤으므로 이스라엘 사람들은 오늘날까지도 엉덩이뼈에 붙어 있는 큰 힘줄을 먹지 않는다

(The man struck the tendon of Jacob's hip, so the Israelites do not eat the large tendon attached to the hip bone to this day)
