[현대인성경 구약 출애굽기 17장] 하나님의 능력으로 아말렉과의 전쟁에서 승리를 쟁취한 모세 : [Modern Human Bible, Old Testament Exodus chapter 17] Moses won the battle against the Amalekites by the power of God

1. 이스라엘 백성은 여호와의 명령대로 신 광야를 떠나 또 다른 곳으로 이동 하였다. 그들이 르비딤에 이르러 천막을 쳤으나 그 곳에는 마실 물이 없었다

(The Israelites left the Wilderness of Sin and moved to another place as the Lord had commanded them. When they came to Rephidim, they pitched their tents, but there was no water to drink)

2. 그러자 백성들이 모세에게 투덜대며 "우리에게 마실 물을 주시오" 하고 소리쳤다. 그래서 모세가 그들에게 "여러분은 어째서 투덜대십니까? 어째서 여호와를 시험하십니까?" 하고 꾸짖었다

(Then the people grumbled against Moses, saying, "Give us water to drink." So Moses said to them, "Why do you grumble? Why are you testing the Lord?" and rebuked)

3. 그러나 목마른 백성들은 모세에게 "어째서 당신이 우리를 이집트에서 끌어내어 우리와 우리 자녀와 가축이 다 목말라 죽게 하십니까?" 하고 불평하였다(But the thirsty people said to Moses, "Why did you bring us out of Egypt, so that we and our children and livestock all die of thirst?" and complained)

4. 그때 모세가 여호와께 "내가 이 백성을 어떻게 해야 합니까? 얼마 안 가서 그들이 나에게 돌질할 것입니다" 하고 부르짖자(Then Moses cried out to the Lord, "What should I do with this people? Soon they will come against me")

5. 여호와께서 모세에게 대답하였다. "너는 백성들 앞으로 가거라. 네가 갈 때는 이스라엘 장로들을 데리고 나일강을 치던 네 지팡이를 손에 들고 가거라(The Lord answered Moses. “Go before the people. When you go, take the elders of Israel with you and take your staff that struck the Nile in your hand)

6. 내가 시내산 바위 위에서 네 앞에 서겠다. 너는 그 지팡이로 바위를 쳐라. 그러면 바위에서 물이 나와 백성이 마실 수 있을 것이다." 그래서 모세는 이스라엘 장로들이 보는 앞에서 그대로 하였다

(I will stand before you on the rock of Sinai. You hit the rock with that staff. Then water will come out of the rock so that the people can drink.” So Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel)

7. 모세는 그 곳 이름을 맛사 또는 므리바라고 불렀다. 이것은 이스라엘 백성이 여호와와 다투고 시험하여 "여호와께서 우리 가운데 계시느냐, 계시지 않느냐?" 하고 떠들어댔기 때문이다

(Moses called the place Massa or Meribah. This caused the Israelites to quarrel with the Lord and test them, saying, "Is the Lord among us or not?" Because I was talking)

8. 이때 아말렉 사람들이 와서 르비딤에 있는 이스라엘 백성을 공격하였다

(At this time the Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim)

9. 그러자 모세가 여호수아에게 "병력을 동원하여 나가서 아말렉과 싸워라. 내일 내가 하나님의 지팡이를 손에 들고 산꼭대기에서 서겠다" 하고 말하였다(Then Moses said to Joshua, "Move out your troops and go out to fight Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the mountain with the staff of God in my hand")

이스라엘과는 늘 적대적인 관계에 있었다. 그들은 출애굽한 이스라엘을 최초로 공격하였고
It has always been hostile to Israel. They were the first to attack Israel after the Exodus.

10. 그래서 여호수아는 모세가 명령한 대로 나가서 아말렉과 싸우고 한편 모세와 아론과 훌은 산꼭대기로 올라갔다

(So Joshua went out and fought Amalek as Moses had commanded, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the mountain)

11. 그런데 모세가 손을 들고 있는 동안은 이스라엘 백성이 이기고 손을 내리면 아말렉이 이겼다

(But as long as Moses held up his hand, the Israelites prevailed, and when he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed)

12. 모세의 팔이 피곤해지자 아론과 훌이 돌을 가져다가 모세를 그 위에 앉히고 해가 질 때까지 그들이 양쪽에 서서 하나는 이 팔을, 하나는 저 팔을 붙들어 그 손이 내려오지 않게 하였다

(When Moses' arms grew weary, Aaron and Hur took a stone and sat him on it, and they stood on either side until the sun went down, one holding one arm and the other holding the hand so that it would not come down)

13. 이렇게 하여 여호수아는 아말렉군을 쳐서 완전히 무찔렀다

(So Joshua struck the Amalekites and completely defeated them)

14. 그때 여호와께서 모세에게 "너는 이것을 책에 기록하여 기념이 되게 하고 그것을 여호수아에게 자세히 들려 주어라. 내가 지상에서 아말렉을 완전히 없애버리겠다" 하고 말씀하셨다(Then the LORD said to Moses, "Write this in a book for a memorial, and tell Joshua in detail. I will destroy Amalek from the earth")

15. 모세는 거기서 단을 쌓고 그것을 '여호와-닛시' 라고 부르며

(Moses built an altar there and called it 'Jehovah-Nissi')

히브리어 닛시는 깃발, 신호용 장대 등의 뜻인데, 여호와는 나의 깃발이라는 말은 승리와 소망을 뜻한다. 구약성서 모세가 아말렉 군대와 싸워 승리한 기념으로 세운 제단에 붙여진 명칭이다.
The Hebrew word nissi means flag, signal pole, etc. The word Jehovah is my banner means victory and hope. It is the name given to the altar built by Moses in the Old Testament to commemorate his victory over the Amalekites

16. "여호와의 기를 높이 쳐들어라! 여호와께서 아말렉과 대대로 싸우실 것이다!" 하고 외쳤다

("Hold up the banner of the LORD! The LORD will fight Amalek from generation to generation!" exclaimed)
