1 “에스라가 성전 앞에 엎드려 죄를 고백하며 울고 기도하자 이스라엘의 많은 남녀 백성들과 아이들이 그의 주위에 모여 통곡하였다.”When Ezra fell down in front of the temple, confessing his sins, weeping and praying, many men, women, and children of Israel gathered around him and wept bitterly
‭‭2 “그때 엘람의 자손인 여히엘의 아들 스가냐가 에스라에게 이렇게 말하였다. “우리가 이방 여자들과 결혼하여 우리 하나님께 범죄하였으나 아직도 이스라엘에는 희망이 있습니다.”Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, a descendant of Elam, said to Ezra: “There is still hope for Israel, even though we have sinned against our God by marrying foreign women
‭‭3 “이제 우리가 우리 하나님 앞에서 서약을 하고 이 이방 여자들과 그들의 자녀들을 쫓아내도록 합시다. 우리는 하나님의 명령을 두려워하는 사람들과 당신의 지시에 따르겠습니다.”Now let us take an oath before our God and drive out these foreign women and their children. We will follow your instructions with those who fear God's commands
‭‭4 “자, 일어나십시오. 이것은 당신이 해야 할 일입니다. 우리가 당신을 힘껏 지원할테니 용기를 가지고 이 일을 실행하십시오.””Come on, wake up. This is what you need to do. Do this with courage as we will do our best to support you.”
‭‭5 “그래서 에스라는 일어나 제사장과 레위인의 지도자들과 거기에 모인 모든 백성들에게 스가냐의 제의에 따르겠다는 맹세를 하게 하고”So Ezra got up and made the priests and the leaders of the Levites and all the people who were present swear an oath to obey Shecaniah's offer
‭‭6 “성전 앞에서 물러나 엘리아십의 아들 여호하난의 방으로 들어가서 백성들의 죄를 슬퍼하며 아무것도 먹지 않고 마시지도 않았다.”They withdrew from the temple and went into the chamber of Jehohanan son of Eliashib, and mourned the sins of the people, neither eating nor drinking
‭‭7 “그 후에 모든 귀환자들은 예루살렘에 모이라는 포고령이 유다와 예루살렘 전역에 공포되었다.”Thereafter, a decree was issued throughout Judah and Jerusalem, calling all the returnees to assemble at Jerusalem
‭‭8 “그 내용은 누구든지 3일 이내에 예루살렘에 오지 않으면 지도자들의 결정에 따라 그의 전재산을 몰수하고 귀환자 집단에서 추방하겠다는 것이었다.”It stipulated that if anyone did not come to Jerusalem within three days, by decision of the leaders, all his property would be confiscated and he would be expelled from the returnee community
‭‭9 “그러자 유다와 베냐민 모든 사람들이 3일 이내에 예루살렘에 다 모였는데 그들이 한자리에 모인 때는 9월 20일이었다. 그들이 모두 성전 앞 광장에 앉아 그 일의 심각성과 쏟아지는 비 때문에 떨고 있을 때”Then all the people of Judah and Benjamin gathered together in Jerusalem within three days, and when they gathered together, it was September 20th. ‭‭10 “제사장 에스라가 일어나 그들에게 이렇게 말하였다. “여러분이 이방 여자들과 결혼하여 범죄하였으므로 이스라엘의 죄가 한층 더 많아졌습니다.”Ezra the priest stood up and said to them: “Israel’s sin has increased because you have married foreign women and have sinned
‭‭11 “그러므로 이제 여러분은 우리 조상의 하나님 여호와께 여러분의 죄를 고백하고 그분을 기쁘게 하는 일을 해야 합니다. 먼저 이 땅에 사는 이방 민족들과 관계를 끊고 여러분의 외국인 아내를 추방하십시오.””So now you must confess your sins to the Lord, the God of our ancestors, and do what pleases him. First cut off relations with the foreign nations living in the land, and expel your foreign wives.”
‭‭12 “그러자 거기에 모인 군중들이 큰소리로 대답하였다. “우리가 당신의 말씀대로 하겠습니다.”Then the crowd gathered there answered with a loud voice. “We will do as you say
‭‭13 “그러나 이처럼 사람이 많고 비가 마구 쏟아지고 있으니 우리가 이대로 계속 서 있을 수는 없습니다. 더구나 이 죄에 관련된 사람들이 너무 많아 이것은 하루 이틀에 해결될 문제가 아닙니다.”But with so many people and pouring rain, we cannot stand still. Moreover, there are so many people involved in this sin that this is not a problem that can be solved in a day or two
‭‭14 “그러므로 우리를 대신해서 이 문제를 처리할 지도자들을 세워 예루살렘에 머물게 하고 이방 여자에게 장가든 사람들은 자기 성의 지도자들과 재판관들과 함께 지정된 시간에 와서 이 문제를 해결하여 우리 하나님의 분노가 우리에게서 떠나게 합시다.””Therefore, we appoint leaders to deal with this matter on our behalf, and have them stay in Jerusalem, and those who marry foreign women will come at the appointed time with the leaders and judges in their cities to settle this matter so that the anger of our God may turn away from us. Let's do it.”
‭‭15 “그러자 아사헬의 아들 요나단과 디과의 아들 야스야는 므술람과 레위 사람 삽브대의 지지를 받아 이 제의에 반대하고 나섰다.”Then Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jasiah the son of Digwa opposed the proposal, supported by Meshullam and Shabbedai the Levite
‭‭16 “그러나 그 밖의 사람들은 모두 그 제의를 받아들였으므로 제사장 에스라는 각 집안에서 지도자를 한 사람씩 뽑아 그 일을 처리하도록 하였다. 그래서 그들은 10월 1일에 그 일을 조사하기 시작하여”But everyone else accepted the offer, so Ezra the priest appointed a leader from each family to handle the task. So they started looking into it on the 1st of October and

‭‭19 “저희가 다 손을 잡아 맹세하여 그 아내를 보내기로 하고 또 그 죄를 인하여 수양 하나를 속건제로 드렸으며”They all held hands and swore to send his wife away, and offered a ram as a trespass offering for his sin
‭‭20 “또 임멜 자손 중에는 하나니와 스바댜요”And of the children of Immer, Hanani and Shephatiah
21 “하림 자손 중에는 마아세야와 엘리야와 스마야와 여히엘과 웃시야요”Of the children of Harim, Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah
‭‭22 “바스훌 자손 중에는 엘료에내와 마아세야와 이스마엘과 느다넬과 요사밧과 엘라사였더라”Among the descendants of Pashhur were Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Joshaphat, and Elasha
‭‭23 “레위 사람 중에는 요사밧과 시므이와 글라야라 하는 글리다와 브다히야와 유다와 엘리에셀이었더라”Among the Levites were Joshaphat, Shimei, Klida, who was called Kelaia, Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer
‭‭24 “노래하는 자 중에는 엘리아십이요 문지기 중에는 살룸과 델렘과 우리였더라”Among the singers was Eliashib, and among the gatekeepers were Shallum, Telem, and Uri
‭‭25 “이스라엘 중에는 바로스 자손 중 라먀와 잇시야와 말기야와 미야민과 엘르아살과 말기야와 브나야요”Ramiah, Issiah, Malkijah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malkijah, and Benaiah, of the children of Parosh among Israel
‭‭26 “엘람 자손 중 맛다냐와 스가랴와 여히엘과 압디와 여레못과 엘리야요”Of the children of Elam, Mattaniah, Zechariah, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth, and Elijah
‭‭27 “삿두 자손 중 엘료에내와 엘리아십과 맛다냐와 여레못과 사밧과 아시사요”Of the sons of Saddhu, Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Shabad, and Aziza
‭‭28 “베배 자손 중 여호하난과 하나냐와 삽배와 아들래요”Of the children of Bebai, Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, and Sonlai
‭‭29 “바니 자손 중 므술람과 말룩과 아다야와 야숩과 스알과 여레못이요”Of the children of Bani, Meshullam, Malluk, Adaiah, Jashub, Shear, and Jeremoth
‭‭30 “바핫모압 자손 중 앗나와 글랄과 브나야와 마아세야와 맛다냐와 브살렐과 빈누이와 므낫세요”Of the children of Pahathmoab, Atna, Gelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, Binnui, and Manasseh
‭‭31 “하림 자손 중 엘리에셀과 잇시야와 말기야와 스마야와 시므온과”Of the children of Harim, Eliezer, Issias, Malchiah, Shemaiah, Simeon,
‭‭32 “베냐민과 말룩과 스마랴요”Benjamin, Malluch, and Shemariah
‭‭33 “하숨 자손 중 맛드내와 맛닷다와 사밧과 엘리벨렛과 여레매와 므낫세와 시므이요”Of the children of Hashum, Mattenai, Mattathah, Shabat, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, and Shimei
‭‭34 “바니 자손 중 마아대와 아므람과 우엘과”Of the children of Bani, Maadai, Amram, Uel,
‭‭35 “브나야와 베드야와 글루히와”Benaiah and Bediah and Gluhiwa
‭‭36 “와냐와 므레못과 에랴십과”Vaniah, Meremoth, Eriahshib,
‭‭37 “맛다냐와 맛드내와 야아수와”Mattaniah and Maddenai and Yaasu
‭‭38 “바니와 빈누이와 시므이와”Bani and Binnui and Shimei
‭‭39 “셀레먀와 나단과 아다야와”Shelemiah, Nathan, and Adaiah,
‭‭40 “막나드배와 사새와 사래와”The Magnard Boat, the Sasae, and the Sarai
‭‭41 “아사렐과 셀레먀와 스마랴와”Azarel, and Shelemiah, and Shemariah,
‭‭42 “살룸과 아마랴와 요셉이요”Shallum, Amariah, and Joseph
‭‭43 “느보 자손 중 여이엘과 맛디디야와 사밧과 스비내와 잇도와 요엘과 브나야더라”Of the children of Nebo, Jeiel, Mattithiah, Shabat, Zebinai, Iddo, Joel, and Benaiah
‭‭44 “이상은 모두 이방 여인을 취한 자라 그 중에 자녀를 낳은 여인도 있었더라”These were all married to foreign women, some of whom had children
