1 “그로부터 4개월 후 3월의 어느 날 나는 황제에게 술을 가지고 가서 따라 드렸다. 그러자 지금까지 내게서 한번도 슬픈 빛을 찾아보지 못한”Four months later, one day in March, I brought wine to the emperor and served him. Then, until now, I have never found a sad light in me
‭‭2 “황제는 “무슨 일이냐?” 하고 물으면서 “아프지도 않은 네 얼굴에 수심이 가득한 것을 보니 너에게 무슨 문제가 있는 것이 틀림없구나” 하였다. 그때 나는 대단히 두려웠지만”The emperor asked, "What's the matter?" He said, "Seeing that your face, which is not hurt, is full of sorrow, there must be something wrong with you." I was very afraid then
‭‭3 “황제에게 이렇게 말하였다. “황제 폐하께서 오래오래 사시기를 바랍니다. 내 조상들이 묻혀 있는 성이 황폐하고 성문이 불탄 채 그대로 있으니 어찌 내 얼굴에 수심이 없겠습니까?””He said to the emperor: “I hope His Majesty the Emperor lives a long time. The city where my ancestors are buried is in ruins and its gates are burned. How can my face not be sad?”
‭‭4 “그러자 황제는 “네가 원하는 것이 무엇이냐?” 하고 물었다. 그래서 나는 하늘의 하나님께 잠시 기도한 다음”Then the emperor asked, "What do you want?" he asked. So I prayed to the God of heaven for a while,
‭‭5 “황제에게 이렇게 대답하였다. “만일 황제 폐하께서 나를 좋게 보시고 나에게 은혜를 베풀고자 하신다면 나를 유다 땅으로 돌아가게 하여 내 조상들이 묻혀 있는 성을 재건할 수 있게 해 주십시오.””He replied to the emperor: “If your majesty sees me favorably and wishes to show me favor, please let me return to the land of Judah so that I can rebuild the city where my ancestors are buried.”
‭‭6 “그때 황후와 함께 앉아 있던 황제는 “얼마나 오래 걸리겠느냐? 지금 가면 언제 돌아오겠느냐?” 하고 물으며 내 요구를 쾌히 승낙하셨다. 그래서 나는 날짜를 정하고”At that time, the emperor, who was sitting with the empress, said, “How long will it take? If I go now, when will you come back?” He readily agreed to my request. So I set a date
‭‭7 “황제에게 다시 이렇게 부탁하였다. “만일 황제 폐하께서 좋게 여기신다면 유프라테스강 서쪽 지방의 총독들에게 보일 공문을 써 주셔서 내가 유다까지 무사히 갈 수 있도록 해 주십시오.”He asked the emperor again. “If it pleases your Majesty the Emperor, please write me an official letter to be sent to the governors of the region west of the Euphrates River, so that I can safely reach Judah
‭‭8 “그리고 황제의 산림을 관리하는 아삽에게 줄 공문도 써 주셔서 성전 곁에 있는 요새의 문과 성벽과 내가 살 집을 지을 목재를 나에게 주도록 해 주십시오.” 하나님께서 나와 함께하셨으므로 황제는 내가 요구한 모든 것을 다 들어주시고”Also, please write an official letter for Asaph, who is in charge of the emperor’s forest, so that he may give me the gates and walls of the fortress next to the temple and the timber to build my house.” Because God was with me, the Emperor gave me everything I asked of him
‭‭9 “몇몇 군 지휘관들과 기병대도 보내 주셨다. 그래서 나는 그들과 함께 유프라테스강 서쪽 지방으로 가서 그 곳 총독들에게 황제가 써 준 공문을 주었다.”He also sent some military commanders and cavalry. So I went with them to the region west of the Euphrates and gave the governors there an official letter from the emperor
‭‭10 “그러나 호론 사람 산발랏과 정부 관리가 된 암몬 사람 도비야가 이스라엘 사람의 복지를 위해 일할 사람이 온다는 말을 듣고 대단히 격분하였다.”But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite, who became a government official, heard that a man was coming to work for the welfare of the Israelites, they became very enraged
‭‭11 “나는 예루살렘으로 가서 그 곳에 3일 동안 머물러 있으면서도”I went to Jerusalem and stayed there for three days,
‭‭12 “하나님께서 내 마음을 감동시키셔서 예루살렘을 위해 하게 하신 일을 아무에게도 말하지 않았다. 그 후에 나는 몇 사람과 함께 밤중에 일어나 밖으로 나갔는데 내가 탄 나귀 외에는 다른 사람이 탈 짐승이 없었다.”I did not tell anyone what God had moved my heart to do for Jerusalem. After that, I got up and went out in the middle of the night with a few people, and there was no other animal to ride on except the donkey I rode on
‭‭13 “나는 서쪽의 골짜기문을 빠져나가 남쪽으로 가서 용의 우물이라는 곳을 지나 똥문으로 가면서 무너진 성벽과 불에 타 버린 성문들을 일일이 조사하였다.”I passed through the valley gate in the west, went south, passed a place called the dragon's well, and went to the dung gate
‭‭14 “그런 다음 나는 동쪽으로 샘문과 왕의 못으로 갔으나 내가 탄 나귀가 지나갈 길이 없었다.”Then I went east to the Spring Gate and the King's Pool, but the donkey I was riding on could not pass
‭‭15 “그래서 나는 기드론 골짜기를 따라 올라가면서 성벽을 조사한 다음 오던 길을 되돌아 골짜기문을 통해 성으로 돌아왔다.”So I went up the Kidron Valley, surveyed the city walls, then returned the way I had come and returned to the city through the valley gate
‭‭16 “하지만 그 성의 지도자들은 내가 어디 가서 무엇을 했는지 알지 못하였다. 이것은 내가 그때까지도 제사장들과 지도자들과 귀족들과 그 밖에 거기서 일하는 사람들에게 아무것도 말해 주지 않았기 때문이었다.”But the leaders of the city did not know where I had gone or what I had done. This was because I had not told the priests, the leaders, the nobles, or anyone else who worked there
‭‭17 “그 후에 나는 그들에게 이렇게 말하였다. “우리가 어떤 어려움에 처해 있는지는 여러분도 잘 아는 사실입니다. 예루살렘이 폐허가 되었고 그 성문들은 다 불타 버리고 말았습니다. 자, 예루살렘 성벽을 재건하여 더 이상 수치를 당하지 않도록 합시다.””After that I said to them: “You know very well what difficulties we are in. Jerusalem is in ruins and all its gates have been burned. Come, let us rebuild the walls of Jerusalem so that we will no longer be put to shame.”
‭‭18 “그러고서 나는 그들에게 하나님이 나를 도우신 일과 황제가 나에게 말한 것을 이야기해 주었다. 그러자 그들은 “재건 공사를 시작합시다” 하고 그 일에 착수할 준비를 하였다.”Then I told them how God had helped me and what the emperor had told me. Then they said, “Let’s start the rebuilding work,” and got ready to get to work
‭‭19 “그러나 호론 사람 산발랏과 정부 관리가 된 암몬 사람 도비야와 아라비아 사람 게셈이 이 말을 듣고 “무슨 일을 할 셈인가? 너희가 황제를 반역하려고 하느냐?” 하고 우리를 비웃고 조롱하였다.”But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arab heard this, they said, “What are you going to do? Are you trying to rebel against the emperor?” They laughed at us and mocked us
‭‭20 “그래서 나는 그들에게 이렇게 말하였다. “하늘의 하나님이 우리를 도우실 것이오. 우리는 그의 종이므로 이 성벽을 재건할 생각이오. 하지만 당신들은 예루살렘에 대하여 주장할 권리나 명분이 아무것도 없소.””So I said to them: “The God of heaven will help us. Since we are his servants, we intend to rebuild this wall. But you have no right or claim to Jerusalem.”
