1. 그래서 야곱은 모든 소유를 가지고 그 곳을 떠났다. 그는 브엘세바에 이르러 자기 아버지 이삭의 하나님께 제사를 드렸다(So Jacob took all that he had and left. He came to Beersheba and offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac)
2. 그 날 밤 하나님이 환상 가운데 나타나셔서 "야곱아, 야곱아!" 하고 부르셨다. 그때 야곱이 "내가 여기 있습니다" 하고 대답하자(That night, God appeared in a vision and said, "Jacob, Jacob!" he called Then Jacob answered, "Here I am")
3. 하나님이 이렇게 말씀하셨다. "나는 하나님 곧 네 아비지의 하나님이다. 이집트로 내려가는 것을 두려워하지 말아라. 내가 거기서 네 후손을 큰 민족이 되게 하겠다(God said: "I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt. I will make your descendants a great nation there)
4. 내가 너와 함께 이집트로 내려갈 것이며 네 후손을 인도하여 다시 이 땅으로 올라오게 할 것이다. 그러나 너는 요셉이 지켜 보는 가운데 이집트에서 죽을 것이다"(I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will bring your descendants back to this land. But you will die in Egypt while Joseph watches")
5. 야곱이 브엘시바에서 떠날 때 그의 아들들은 바로가 보낸 수레에 자기들의 아버지 야곱과 처자들을 태웠다(When Jacob departed from Beer-shiba, his sons put their father Jacob and their wives in a chariot sent by Pharaoh)
6. 그들은 가나안 땅에서 얻은 가축과 모든 재산을 가지고 이집트로 갔는데 야곱은 그의 모든 자손,(They brought their livestock and all their possessions from the land of Canaan, and went to Egypt, and Jacob, all his descendants,)

22. 이상은 라헬이 야곱에게 낳은 자손들로 모두 14명이었다(These were all 14 of Rachel's descendants to Jacob)
23. 또 단과 그의 아들 후심;(Also Dan and his son Husim;)
24. 납달리와 그의 아들인 야셀, 구니, 예셀, 실렘이다(Naphtali and his sons Jazer, Kuni, Jezer, and Shilem)
25. 이상은 라반이 그의 딸 라헬에게 준 여종 빌하가 야곱에게 낳은 자손들로 모두 7명이었다(These were the seven descendants of Bilhah, the maidservant, whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel, to Jacob)

28. 야곱이 먼저 유다를 요셉에게 보내 고센에서 만나자고 하였다. 그들이 고센 땅에 도착하자(Jacob first sent Judah to Joseph to meet him in Goshen. When they arrive in the land of Goshen)
29. 요셉은 수레를 타고 고센으로 와서 아버지를 만나 목을 끌어안고 오랫동안 울었다(Joseph rode a chariot to Goshen, met his father, hugged his neck, and wept for a long time)
30. 이때 야곱이 요셉에게 "네가 아직 살아있는 것을 내 눈으로 똑똑히 보았으니 이제는 죽어도 여한이 없다" 하였다(Then Jacob said to Joseph, "I have seen with my own eyes that you are still alive, and now there is no time to die")
31. 그리고 요셉은 형들과 그들의 가족들에게 이렇게 말하였다. "내가 바로에게 가서 가나안 땅에 살던 내 형님들과 아버지의 가족들이 모두 여기에 왔다고 말해야겠습니다(And Joseph said to his brothers and their families: “I must go to Pharaoh and tell him that my brothers and my father’s family who lived in the land of Canaan are all here)
32. 나는 또 왕에게 '그들은 목축을 하는 사람들이므로 모든 재산을 가지고 양과 소도 함께 끌고 왔습니다' 하고 말하겠습니다(I will also say to the king, 'They are herders, so they brought with them all their possessions, sheep and cattle')
33. 바로가 형님들과 여러 가족들에게 직업이 무엇이냐고 묻거든(When Baro asks his brothers and other family members what their job is)
34. '우리는 어렸을 때부터 지금가지 우리 조상들처럼 목축을 해왔습니다' 하고 말하십시오. 이집트 사람들이 목축하는 사람들을 천시하기 때문에 형님들과 여러 가족들은 고센 땅에서 살게 될 것입니다"(Say, 'We have been herding like our ancestors since we were little.' Because the Egyptians despise pastoralists, you and your family will live in the land of Gosene")

‘땅의 언덕’이란 뜻. 애굽의 나일 강 삼각주 남동 지역으로 목축에 알맞은 땅이다. 요셉이 애굽 총리로 있을 때 가나안에서 이주한 야곱과 그 가족들이 정착하여, 출애굽 때까지 거주했던 곳이다(창 46장; 출 8:22; 9:26). 일명 ‘라암세스’(창 47:11), ‘소안 들’(시 78:12, 43)로도 불렸다. 이외에도 ① 가사와 기브온 사이에 위치한 팔레스타인 남쪽 지역 성읍(수 10:41) ② 유다 산지 남서쪽에 있던 성읍(수 15:51) 등이 있다.

-> 이집트인들은 주로 농경생활(논밭을 갈아 농작물을 심고 가꾸며 살아가는 생활)을 하며 살아서, 목축(소/말/양/돼지 따위의 가축을 많이 기르는 일)업을 귀하게 여기지 않았던 것 같습니다. 이때도 천한일/귀한일을 따져가면서 일한건 여전했던 것으로 보입니다. 운이 좋았던 건지 요셉이 지혜가 있었던 건지는 모르지만, 고센이라는 땅은 목축업을 하기에는 아주 좋아서 이스라엘인들이 장기간 이집트 백성이 되어서 자유롭게 살았다고 합니다. 또한, 가나안 땅과도 인접해 있어서 "우리는 언제든지 집으로 돌아갈 수 있어" 라는 마음을 편하게 갖게 해주는 최적의 장소였던 것 같습니다.
