1 “그 달 24일에 이스라엘 백성들은 다시 모여 금식하며 삼베 옷을 입고 머리에 티끌을 뒤집어쓰고”On the 24th day of the month, the Israelites gathered together again and fasted, clothed in linen and dust on their heads
‭‭2 “모든 이방 사람들과의 관계를 끊은 채 자기들의 죄와 조상들의 죄를 고백하였다.”They severed all ties with all foreigners and confessed their sins and the sins of their ancestors
‭‭3 “그들은 그대로 서서 3시간 동안 낭독하는 여호와의 율법의 말씀을 듣고 그 다음 3시간 동안은 자기들의 죄를 고백하며 그들의 하나님 여호와께 경배하였다.”They stood still and listened to the words of the Lord's law read aloud for three hours, and for the next three hours they confessed their sins and worshiped the Lord their God
‭‭4 “이때 레위 사람 예수아, 바니, 갓미엘, 스바냐, 분니, 세레뱌, 또 다른 바니, 그리고 그나니는 단상에 서서 여호와께 큰 소리로 부르짖고 기도하였으며”At this time, the Levites Jeshua, Bani, Gadmiel, Zephaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, another Bani, and Kenani stood on the altar and cried and prayed with a loud voice to the LORD
‭‭5 “또 레위 사람 예수아, 갓미엘, 바니, 하삽느야, 세레뱌, 호디야, 스바냐, 브다히야는 백성들을 향해 이렇게 외쳤다. “자, 일어나 영원히 계시는 우리 하나님 여호와를 찬양합시다!” 그러자 에스라는 이렇게 기도하였다. “주의 영광스러운 이름을 찬양합니다. 주의 이름은 인간의 언어로 표현할 수 없을 만큼 위대합니다.”And the Levites Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Zephaniah, and Pethahiah shouted to the people: “Come now, let us rise up and praise Jehovah, our God who lives forever!” Then Ezra prayed: “Praise your glorious name. Your name is too great to be expressed in human language
‭‭6 “주는 유일하신 여호와이시며 하늘과 별, 그리고 땅과 바다와 그 가운데 있는 모든 것을 지으시고 생명을 주시므로 수많은 하늘의 천사들이 주께 경배를 드립니다.”You are the only Jehovah, who created the heavens and the stars, the earth and the sea, and all that is in them, and gives life to you. So many angels in heaven worship you
‭‭7 “주는 아브람을 택하시고 그를 갈대아 우르에서 인도해 내어 그에게 아브라함이란 이름을 주신 여호와 하나님이십니다.”You are the Lord God, who chose Abram and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldees and gave him the name Abraham
‭‭8 “주께서는 그가 주 앞에서 신실한 것을 보시고 그와 계약을 맺어 가나안족, 헷족, 아모리족, 브리스족, 여부스족, 기르가스족의 땅을 그의 후손들에게 주시겠다고 말씀하시고 그 약속을 지키셨으니 참으로 주는 의로우신 분이십니다.”When the LORD saw that he was faithful before the LORD, he made a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites, and Girgashites to his descendants. He kept his promise. You are a noble person
‭‭9 “주는 우리 조상들이 이집트에서 고통당하는 것을 보시고 홍해에서 그들이 부르짖는 소리를 들으셨습니다.”You saw the suffering of our fathers in Egypt, and you heard their cry at the Red Sea
‭‭10 “주께서 놀라운 기적을 행하여 바로와 그 신하들과 그 땅 백성들을 치신 것은 그들이 주의 백성을 잔인하게 학대한 것을 주께서 아셨기 때문이었습니다. 그 일로 주께서는 오늘날까지도 잊혀질 수 없는 명성을 얻으셨습니다.”The reason the Lord performed an amazing miracle and struck down Pharaoh, his servants, and the people of the land was because the Lord knew that they had cruelly mistreated His people. It gave the Lord a reputation that remains unforgettable to this day
‭‭11 “주는 우리 조상들 앞에서 바다를 갈라 주의 백성이 마른 땅을 밟고 그 가운데로 지나가게 하셨으며 그들을 추격하는 원수들을 깊은 물에 돌을 던지듯이 바다에 던지셨습니다.”You parted the sea before our fathers, so that your people passed through it on dry ground. You threw their enemies who pursued them into the sea like stones into deep water
‭‭12 “그리고 낮에는 그들을 구름 기둥으로 인도하시고 밤에는 불 기둥으로 그들이 갈 길을 비춰 주셨으며”He guided them by day by a pillar of cloud, and by night by a pillar of fire to give them light on the path they should take
‭‭13 “시내산에 내려오셔서 주의 백성과 말씀하시고 훌륭한 주의 법과 규정을 주셨습니다.”You came down to Mount Sinai and spoke with your people and gave them your excellent laws and regulations
‭‭14 “또 주께서는 그들에게 안식일을 거룩하게 지키라고 가르치시고 주의 종 모세를 통해 그 모든 것을 지키라고 명령하셨습니다.”You also taught them to keep the Sabbath day holy and commanded them to observe it through your servant Moses
‭‭15 “그들이 굶주릴 때 주께서는 하늘에서 양식을 주시고 그들이 목마를 때 바위에서 물을 내어 그들을 먹이셨으며 또 그들에게 주시겠다고 약속하신 땅에 들어가 그것을 차지하라고 말씀하셨습니다.”When they were hungry, you gave them food from heaven; when they were thirsty, you gave them water out of a rock and fed them; and you told them to go in and take possession of the land that you had promised to give them
‭‭16 ““그러나 우리 조상들은 교만하여 고집을 피우고 주의 명령에 순종하지 않았습니다.”“But our fathers were proud and stubborn and did not obey your commands
‭‭17 “그들은 거역하며 주께서 그들 가운데 행하신 놀라운 일을 잊어버리고 자기들 멋대로 한 지도자를 세워 종살이하던 이집트로 되돌아가려고 하였습니다. 그렇지만 주는 용서하시고 은혜를 베푸시며 불쌍히 여기시고 쉽게 화를 내시지 않는 사랑의 하나님이시므로 그들을 버리지 않으셨습니다.”They rebelled and forgot the wonderful works the Lord had done among them, and they set up a leader of their own and tried to return to slavery in Egypt. However, you did not abandon them because you are a loving God who is forgiving, gracious, compassionate, and not easily offended
‭‭18 “그들이 송아지 우상을 만들고 그것이 자기들을 이집트에서 인도해 낸 신이라고 외치며 주를 모독했을 때에도”When they made an idol of a calf and blasphemed the LORD, saying that it was the god who brought them out of Egypt
‭‭19 “주는 크게 자비를 베푸셔서 그들을 광야에 버리지 않으시고 낮에는 구름 기둥으로 그들을 인도하셨으며 밤에는 불 기둥으로 그들의 갈 길을 비춰 주셨습니다.”In your great mercy you did not abandon them in the wilderness; you guided them by day with a pillar of cloud, and by night you gave them a pillar of fire to give them light on their path
‭‭20 “또 주께서는 성령으로 그들을 가르치시고 끊임없이 만나를 주시며 목마를 때 마실 물을 주셔서”You taught them by your Holy Spirit and gave them manna continually and water to drink when they were thirsty
‭‭21 “그들이 40년을 광야에서 지내는 동안 아무것도 부족한 것이 없게 하셨으므로 그들은 떨어진 옷을 입지 않았고 신발이 없어 발이 부르트지도 않았습니다.”During the 40 years they spent in the wilderness, He ensured that they lacked nothing; they had no clothes left on them, and their feet did not swell from lack of shoes
‭‭22 ““그때 주께서 많은 나라와 민족을 정복할 수 있도록 하셨으므로 그들은 시혼왕이 다스린 헤스본과 옥왕이 다스린 바산 땅을 점령하였습니다.”“Then the Lord enabled them to subdue many nations and peoples, and they took Heshbon, where King Sihon ruled, and the land of Bashan, where King Og ruled
‭‭23 “주께서는 그들에게 하늘의 별처럼 많은 자손을 주시고 그 조상들에게 차지하라고 말씀하신 땅으로 그들을 인도하여”You will give them descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky, and you will bring them into the land you told their ancestors to possess
‭‭24 “그들이 들어가서 가나안 땅을 정복할 수 있게 하셨습니다. 그러므로 그들은 가나안의 모든 왕들과 백성들을 자기들 마음대로 하여”He allowed them to enter and conquer the land of Canaan. Therefore they did as they pleased with all the kings and people of Canaan
‭‭25 “그들의 요새화된 성들을 점령하고 기름진 땅과 온갖 좋은 물건을 가득 채운 그들의 집들과 이미 파 놓은 우물, 그리고 포도원과 감람원과 많은 과수원을 빼앗아 배불리 먹고 마시며 주께서 주신 복을 마음껏 즐겼습니다.”He took their fortified cities, took their fertile land, their houses filled with all kinds of good things, their wells that had been dug, their vineyards, their olive groves, and their many orchards. They ate and drank to their fill and enjoyed the blessings the Lord had given them
‭‭26 ““그러나 그들은 주께 불순종하고 거역하며 주의 법을 저버리고 주께 돌아오라고 외치는 예언자들을 죽여 주를 모독하였습니다.”“But they disobeyed and rebelled against You, forsaking Your law and blaspheming You by killing the prophets who were calling for them to return to You
‭‭27 “그러므로 주께서 그들을 원수들의 손에 넘겨 고통을 당하게 하셨습니다. 그러나 그들이 환난 중에서 주께 부르짖자 주는 하늘에서 들으시고 그들에게 큰 자비를 베푸셔서 지도자들을 보내 그들을 원수들의 손에서 구출해 주셨습니다.”Therefore the Lord handed them over to their enemies to suffer. But when they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, he heard from heaven and showed them great mercy, sending leaders to rescue them from the hand of their enemies
‭‭28 “그런데도 그들은 평안을 누리게 되자 다시 범죄하였습니다. 그래서 주께서는 그들을 버려 원수들의 지배를 받게 하셨습니다. 그렇지만 그들이 다시 부르짖을 때 주는 하늘에서 들으시고 자비를 베푸셔서 그들을 여러 차례 구출해 내셨습니다.”However, when they enjoyed peace, they sinned again. So the Lord abandoned them and placed them under the control of their enemies. But when they cried out again, the Lord heard from heaven and showed mercy to them, delivering them many times
‭‭29 “주는 그들에게 주의 법에 순종하라고 경고하셨지만 그들은 교만하여 사람이 지키기만 하면 생명을 얻는 주의 법을 거절하고 주의 명령에 불순종하며 고집을 피우고 주의 말씀을 듣지 않았습니다.”You warned them to obey Your law, but they were proud and rejected Your law, which gives them life if they keep it. They disobeyed Your commands, were stubborn, and did not listen to Your words
‭‭30 “주께서는 여러 해 동안 참으시고 주의 예언자들을 통해 성령으로 그들을 경고하셨으나 그들이 듣지 않으므로 그들을 이방 민족의 손에 넘겨 주셨습니다.”You were patient for many years and warned them by your Holy Spirit through your prophets, but they did not listen, so you handed them over to the Gentiles
‭‭31 “그러나 주는 자비로우신 하나님이시므로 그들을 완전히 멸망시키거나 버리지 않으셨으니 주의 크신 은혜와 사랑이었습니다!”But because You are a merciful God, You did not completely destroy them or abandon them, such was Your great grace and love!
‭‭32 ““우리 하나님이시여, 주는 위대하시며 능력이 많으시고 두려운 분이시며 사랑의 계약을 지키시는 신실하신 하나님이십니다. 앗시리아 왕들이 우리를 괴롭힌 때부터 우리 왕들과 지도자들과 제사장들, 그리고 예언자들과 우리 조상들과 주의 모든 백성들이 지금까지 당한 고통을 작은 것으로 여기지 마소서.”“O our God, you are great, mighty, and awesome; you are the faithful God who keeps the covenant of love. Do not consider as a small thing the suffering of our kings, leaders, priests, prophets, our fathers, and all your people from the time the kings of Assyria oppressed us until now
‭‭33 “그러나 주는 우리를 벌하시는 데 공정하셨습니다. 우리가 크게 범죄하였으므로 우리가 당연히 받아야 할 벌을 주셨습니다.”But the Lord has been just in punishing us. Because we have sinned greatly, we have received the punishment we deserve
‭‭34 “우리 조상들과 우리 왕들과 지도자들과 제사장들이 주의 법을 지키지 않고 주의 명령과 경고를 듣지 않았으며”Our fathers, our kings, leaders and priests have not kept your law or listened to your commands and warnings
‭‭35 “그들이 주께서 주신 넓고 기름진 땅에서 주의 축복을 마음껏 누리면서도 주를 섬기지 않았으며 악한 길에서 돌아서지 않았습니다.”Although they enjoyed Your blessings to the full in the large and fertile land You gave them, they did not serve You and did not turn from their evil ways
‭‭36 “그러므로 주께서 우리 조상들에게 주셔서 과실과 다른 좋은 산물을 먹게 하신 이 기름진 땅에서 우리가 이와 같이 종이 되었습니다.”Therefore we have become slaves in this fertile land, which you gave our ancestors to eat from fruit and other good produce
‭‭37 “우리가 지은 죄 때문에 주께서 우리를 다스리게 하신 이방 왕들이 이 땅의 농산물을 먹고 우리와 우리 가축을 마음대로 하고 있으니 우리의 고통은 이루 말할 수 없습니다.”Because of our sins, the foreign kings whom the Lord has placed over us are eating the produce of this land and doing whatever they want to us and our livestock. Our suffering is indescribable
‭‭38 ““우리는 이 모든 일을 생각하며 다시 주를 섬기기로 합의하고 성명서를 작성하여 여기에 우리 지도자들과 레위인들과 제사장들이 서명을 합니다.””“With all these things in mind, we agree to serve the Lord again and write a statement to be signed by our leaders, Levites, and priests.”
